THiS text file explains how to successfully cheat with Dune II for the IBM.
You will need a copy of the game itself (obviously) and Norton Utilities'
DISKEDIT or another similar *HEX* editor. First of all, you need some
knowledge of how to play the game. Soooo, play the game until about level
seven, and use the Harkonnen (the red guys). You're gonna LOVE this game.
Go buy it! It's great, and if you get it, now you can cheat!

The first thing to do is to invoke the hex editor. Edit a savegame file,
called "SAVE0??.DAT," where ?? is the # of the game. Your first saved game
is 00, and your most recent is the highest number. You see a bunch of shit
all over the screen, right? Well, go down until you see the word "UNIT."
After that look for some little signs. It'll look somewhat like this:

.f.....a.bcde. with several other characters mixed in. (Note that you're
................ only LOOOKING around right now, not changing anything.) Ok,
................ now notice that there is a little bit of a repeating pattern
................ every EIGHT lines.... Well, every eight lines, a new UNIT,
................ or vehicle/trooper/aircraft, is shown. Find the very first
................ sign. Then, go two spaces to the left, to point a. Look
................ at the hexadecimal symbol there. This point tells you the
................ allegiance, or what team, the unit belongs to. The teams
.............. are labeled as follows:

HEX TEAM COLOR Now HERE is a good strategy: simply go into the hex
00: Harkonnen Red editor and edit whatever savegame file you want to.
01: Atreides Blue Then change every unit to your team. Next thing you
02: Ordos Green want to do is change their "energy" to 250% (normal
03: Fremen Orange is only 100%). This is 2 times the regular amount
04: Emperor Pink of energy a unit can have. Go to location d. This
05: Mercenary Tan is the unit's energy. Set it to FF, or 255. Norm-
ally a brand new unit has 64 or 2C (HEXADECIMAL) for
its energy (location d). Note that 64 hexadecimal = 100 decimal. For some
reason some types of units are screwed up. For instance, brand new siege
tanks have energy of 2C. If you change something else (such as a soldier)
into a siege tank (we'll get to that one next), and set its energy to 2C, you
never know what'll happen. It'll either give them 100% or about 15% energy.
I still don't know why. I suggest, because this only occurs with siege tanks,
setting anyone's energy to FE. This will give all other units 254% energy and
siege tanks roughly 80% energy.

Next, look at location f. This is the almight one. It tells the program what
type of unit it's about to suck up information about. Here are the numbers
that represent all the different units:

00: Carryall
01: Ornithopter (Ordos & Atreides)
02: Infantry (3)
03: Troopers (3)
04: Soldier
05: Trooper
06: Saboteur (Ordos)
07: Launcher
08: Deviator (Ordos)
09: Tank
0A: Siege tank
0B: Devastator (Harkonnen)
0C: Sonic Tank (Atreides)
0D: Trike
0E: Raider Trike (Ordos)
0F: Quad
10: Harvester
11: MCV (Mobile Construction Vehicle)
19: SANDWORM (PHUN!)

Well, there you have it. Those are all the units available, at least that I've
discovered. Next step: At location b and c are the unit's X and Y coor-
dinates, respectively. They range from 00 to 3F (I think) in both directions.
That part is basically pretty basic, basically.

Ok, last and possibly least but not likely least: At location e is the unit's
repair visits. Always set it to 00 on your units. The higher this number
gets, the weaker and slower the unit gets (a performance-based thing).

Ok, in addition, two plus two equals four (HA!). Ok, seriously, in addition,
the game saves units and buildings (read on) like you read a book: line by
line, from left to right. That's a good way to help you find your guys and
set their energy sky high.

Well, that's all for the UNIT section. At the end of the UNIT section you'll
see BLDG. This means "building," and if you couldn't figure that one out, go
kick yourself in the ass. When the cursor is DIRECTLY ON the "B" in BLDG,
press the right arrow key 10 times. You're now placed at the type of structure
this is. I haven;t messed with this much so I can't exactly compile a list.
Go right six spaces. This is the building's allegiance (codes are the same as
they are for units). Go right 3. This is the building's X coordinate. Now
go right 2 more. This is the building's Y coordinate. One more space over is
the building's energy. Notice that this is exactly the same format as that of
the units. Buildings go every 5 lines -- Go down six lines (from the type of
building marker) and left 8 spaces -- you'll be at the next building. Have
fun with this great method o' cheating.

One more thing.... I have in this packet a cheat for Dune 2. Check it out.
It automatically goes in and edits your game for you - it gives you spice
(covers all visible areas with the thickest spice in the game) and allows
you to edit any unit on the battlefield, changing its type, energy, repairs,
and allegiance. It's written in QuickBASIC 4.5.

Some hints: All units will have 255% energy when you set their energy to
255 and their repairs to 0. For siege tanks and devastators, you have to
set their energy to 255 and their repairs to 1.

Also note that the DUNE2CHT program modifies the file you specify, and saves
its changes to the savegame file called _SAVE000.DAT.

If you have problems with your mouse driver and Dune2cht, try using MOUSE.COM
found in MSMOUS82.ZIP at any local board. And have fun....
