Screensaver and Winamp plug-in
GEISS is sound-reactive eye candy for your computer. It comes as both
a Windows 95/98 screensaver and as a visualization plugin for Winamp.
It can 'hear' your music - and let you SEE your music.
Geiss generates fluid-motion realtime graphics based on the
sound it can hear... that includes audio CDs, a microphone, or line-in
(for the screensaver) or an MP3 file (for the plugin). The graphics
you'll see are a direct response to the music that's playing.
And it's free!
The latest version of Geiss is 4.24, released January 4, 2000.

New features in version 4.24
| |
-documenation & about box have been updated with the new web page address.
-maps 21-25 are now selectable; a two-digit key sequence is now entered to access maps (ex: for mode 17, '1' then '7'). For single-digit maps, pad it with a '0' (ex: map 5 is '0' then '5').
New in version 4.20:
-in truecolor modes, the color of the wave is now synchronized to match the frequencies in the music. Bass will show up as red, mids as green, and treble as blue.
-truecolor modes are now about 10% faster - special thanks to Allen Hansen for all his help!
-added 9 new maps (#17-25)
-added some new palettes
-improved beat detection (for 'shifting' effect)

Mini-update: 4.24c (released 4 april 2002)
This update makes the following minor adjustments to version 4.24:
- used DEFAULT_CHARSET instead of ANSI_CHARSET in CreateFont() call, so now, more foreign text (song titles) should display properly.
- made some small changes to make exiting the plugin a bit safer (changed the way winamp is minimized/restored; waited to destroy plugin window until window class was unregistered; removed a gratuitous 'setcursor' call at the very end.)
- a while back I changed it so the wave colors went to the frequencies in the music, instead of oscillating on their own, and a lot of people have yelled at me over the years for not making this optional, so here ya go - now it's an option - see the lower-left corner of the config panel. =)
- marked the 'frame idle delay' more clearly in the advanced config panel: now says "Frame idle delay: (*crank this up if it runs too fast!!*)".
- in system settings/code generation, told it to use a multithreaded DLL run-time library (was set to single-threaded [non-DLL]).

If the newest version is not working for you, try the archives:

[Geiss 3.61 screensaver]
[GEISS.INI] - a sample .INI file that has preset numbers 75-99 filled in with nicely-tweaked presets. Put this in your WINDOWS directory (for both the plugin and screensaver). Invoke the presets with the LEFT bracket key '[', followed by the two-digit code (e.g. '['-7-5 or '['-9-9). Don't forget - you can always save whatever you're seeing by pressing the RIGHT bracket, then the two digit code of the preset slot you want to overwrite (from 00 to 99)!

System Requirements
Windows 95/98, DirectX 3.0 or later, and a 200 or faster processor. A sound card is very highly recommended.
To use the plugin, you must have Winamp... if you don't already use Winamp, just download the screensaver version of Geiss.
Note that it is highly recommended that you use the screensaver (vs. Winamp) for playing audio CD's.
A Note from Gerald
"[Programmers] are attached to their programs. Indeed, their programs
become extensions of themselves - a fact which is verified in the abominable
practice of attaching one's name to the program itself..."
